Saying Goodbye

*Disclaimer: skip this post if you have never loved an animal- this means you, Sarah! ;)

Throughout my life, I have had to say goodbye to some very loved furry friends. And, working in a pet hospital, I have to say goodbye, almost on a weekly basis, to those pets who have claimed a piece of my heart. It never gets easier, and sometimes we wonder if owning a pet is even worth it. Recently I had to say goodbye to a very special dog who has stolen my heart. It was not easy to hold him as he passed, and hug him as he licked my arm even though he was in pain. I will always miss him but I am so glad for him he is not hurting anymore, because his last few months were not easy ones.

When our clients lose a loved pet, we give them this poem to offer some comfort. I love it, and after 4 years, still can't read it and not cry.

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

Christy,
I love that poem, and I love that those special pets have someone that cares and is kind to them when they are in pain, and in their last hours on this earth. You truly have been blessed with a gift. I am so grateful to know and love you.

Christy,
I am so sorry about your loss. One day I'll have to tell you about Jane. My best friend Kasey's dog. I still can't talk about her without crying. She was the most wonderful dog and had such a sweetness about her. When Katie was little it was like she sensed that she couldn't move around like the other kids and would just snuggle up next to her and sit there. I loved that dog! There, I said it! I've loved a dog!

p.s. That poem is really sweet.

I knew you secretly loved animals! That look of trying to decide between laughing or vomiting everytime we talk about animals was all an act! :)

Oh Christy, just wait one second. While I know Sarah loved Jane (Kasey's dog), she did laugh at me on the phone in high school when I lost my beloved black labrador of 14 years. I hung up on her and didn't talk to her for 2 days! I still love you though, Sarah!

By the way, sweet poem!
